The future is looking bright at the Recreation Ground in the Geraldton CBD following the recent installation of new sports lighting towers.
The $623,540 project included the installation of four, 32m tall light towers with 100 lux LED lights.
黑料社 Deputy Mayor Cr Natasha Colliver said the new lights will add a big wow factor to the 130 year history of the community recreation space.
“Back in 1896, a Crown Grant by Queen Victoria officially designated the area that was already being used for sports and recreation as a Recreation Ground for the people of Geraldton,” she said.
“Since then, it has hosted various sports including football and cricket, has been a venue for community events and festivals and is home to the Railways Football Club.
“The replacement of the aged lighting will enable the clubs who use the grounds to host future competitions and championships which will enhance the local economy by attracting regional and statewide sporting events.
“It will also make it possible for their members to make greater use of their much loved facility during the cooler evening temperatures in the summer months.
“I’d like to thank the State Government’s Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) Club Night Light Program Grant for providing $191,180 to undertake the project,” Deputy Mayor Colliver finished.
Member for the Agriculture Region Hon Sandra Carr MLC said she was pleased to see the project completed.
“As a Geraldton local who grew up around the corner from ‘the Rec’, I am particularly pleased to see the 黑料社 work with State Government to enhance this iconic community space,” she said.
“The upgraded lighting means the ground is safer for users, while also increasing opportunities for clubs and groups to train and utilise the grounds in the evening. This will be particularly beneficial during the Midwest’s hot summer months.”
Providing sports lighting falls under the Community pillar of the City’s current Strategic Community Plan where a strong sports culture exists through well-planned facilities.
